Telugu New Year Ugadi and Akshaya Tritiya have one thing in common. Well begun is half done and therefore people want to do all good things on Ugadi day so that the trend will continue for the rest of the year.

In the case of Akshaya Tritiya, it is believed whatever one did will be everlasting. And so people want to do things like buying gold and purchase of some property so that the prosperity, an index of happy living, will be endless.

Akshaya Tritiya falls on the third day in the month of Vaisakha which is considered auspicious by Hindus. For people in Visakhapatnam and north Andhra in general, the occasion is more significant as the famous Chandana Yatra of Lord Varaha Lakshmi Nrusimha Swamy, the presiding deity of Simhachalam temple in Vizag, is celebrated on this day with over a lakh of devotees visiting the place.

Legend

Legend has it that Kruta Yugam began on this day. At some places in the country, Gowri puja is performed. The day also is said to be the day of the incarnation of Lord Vishnu as Parasurama, the sixth in the series of ten avatars of the supreme god.

This year, Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated on Apirl 24, Tuesday.

In Visakhapatnam city, people find their way to gold shops on Akshaya Tritiya day to buy at lease a gram or two of gold. In order to avoid last minute rush, some buy it on the eve of the festival.

While some buy gold coins, others prefer ornaments so that they can wear them on daily basis or on special occasions.
